Storing the BBQ in Winter

Winter BBQ Storage

As the colder months roll in and the days get shorter, it’s time for BBQ Ben to face the bittersweet moment of packing the grill away for winter. I know, I know—we’d all love to keep those flames roaring year-round, but giving your barbecue a proper winter send-off is the best way to make sure it fires back up flawlessly in spring.

Start by giving your grill a good, thorough clean. Burn off any lingering residue, scrub the grates, empty the ash, and make sure the drip trays aren’t harbouring any surprises. A clean barbecue doesn’t just look better—it prevents corrosion and keeps pests from moving in during the colder months.

Next, check your equipment. Inspect hoses, seals, handles, and any moving parts. A quick once-over now saves you a headache later. If you’re using a charcoal setup, clear out the old fuel; if you’re on gas, disconnect and store cylinders safely in a cool, ventilated spot—not indoors.

Finally, invest in a proper cover. A weatherproof one keeps the frost, rain, and winter grime at bay. If you’ve got the space, tucking your barbecue into a shed or garage is even better. Think of it like putting your grill to bed—it deserves a cosy spot after a hard season’s work.

Winter may quiet the sizzle, but it’s also the perfect time to plan next year’s cooks. New recipes, new rubs, new cuts… the countdown to spring starts now! Until then, keep warm, stay hungry, and remember: a resting barbecue is just gathering strength for its next great feast.
